As TCI continues our preseason baseball coverage, we will be taking a brief look at each of Clemson’s opponents for the upcoming season. We kick off the series with a look at the season opening opponent West Virginia. Stay tuned to TCI throughout the preseason as we continue breakdown the 2015 roster and 2015 opponents as we lead up to Opening Day on February 13th.
Third-year Head Coach Randy Mazey will bring his Mountaineers to Tigertown for a three-game series to kick of the 2015 campaign. Mazey is no stranger to Clemson or Tiger Head Coach Jack Leggett. He was a three-time All-ACC selection as an outfielder/pitcher for the Tigers from 1985-88 and spent a four year stint coaching at Clemson from 1990-93, with the last two seasons spent as an assistant alongside Leggett under legendary Tiger skipper Bill Wilhelm.
West Virginia, members of the Big 12, finished 28-26 (9-14, 6th place in the Big 12) in 2014. The Mountaineers played several ACC members last season, going 6-1 in those contests with wins over Duke, North Carolina, Pittsburgh (twice), and Virginia Tech while splitting a series with Maryland. West Virginia also played 11 teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, going 7-19 in the contests.
The Mountaineers will be in rebuilding mode in 2015 as they welcome back seven position players and two pitchers from last season. Six of the seven returning position players saw considerable action last season while only one of the two returning pitchers was a major contributor. Three of the returners (SS Taylor Munden, C Cameron O’Brien, and LHP Ross Vance) earned Honorable Mention All-Big 12 in 2014
