Roper lights up BC

Jordan Roper is confident he can make every shot he takes. On Saturday he about did.

Roper connected on 8 of 11 shots and scored a career-high 24 points as Clemson won its third straight game with a 64-49 victory over Boston College at Littlejohn Coliseum.

The junior from Columbia scored the game’s first 11 points as he made three of his four shots from behind the three-point line, which helped the Tigers build and early 11-3 lead with 14:11 to go in the first half.

Clemson was in control from then on.

“Often times in games I score a lot in spurts. I just wanted to get the win and just played with enthusiasm and energy,” Roper said. “The game came to me and I kept making shots. It was a good day.”

Roper put the Eagles away early in the second half when he connected on three of his career-high six three-pointers. His fifth and sixth three-pointer gave the Tigers a 22-point lead, 49-27, with 11:29 to play.

At that point Roper had just three less points than Boston College.

“When he is playing like that, it changes us. It really changes us,” Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said. “It really changes us to have another offensive weapon out on the court that can run around and make some shots.

“It puts pressure on the other team’s defense.”

Roper also chipped in to hold one of the ACC’s best scorers and shooters, Olivier Hanlan, to six points through the first 30 minutes of the game on 2 of 8 shooting.

Roper nearly outscored the Eagles (9-11, 1-7 ACC) in the first half as he scored 15 of his 24 points in the first 20 minutes.  The junior was 5 of 6 from the field, including 3 of 4 from behind the arc. He also had two free throws.

Clemson (13-8, 5-4 ACC) led by as many as 17 points in the opening half on two Roper free throws. Those free throws gave the Tigers a 27-10 lead with 5:38 to go in the half. BC scored the last six points of the half to cut the lead to 27-16 at the break.

The Tigers missed11 of their last 13 shots and seven in a row to end the first half, but Clemson got things straight in the second half as it quickly increased the lead to as many as 22 points, thanks in large part to Roper’s three 3-pointers.

“The guys and I wanted to stay locked in and wanted to keep our foot on the pedal because in the last game we got a big lead and we kind of relaxed and they came back,” Roper said. “We just wanted to keep our foot on the pedal and keep attacking and win by a large margin.”

Jaron Blossomgame and Landry Nnoko got in the act before Roper hit a three, Blossomgame got a dunk and then Roper made back-to-back threes to stretch the lead to 49-27.

Boston College, who was held to a season-low 49 points, got no closer than 14 points the rest of the day.

“That was a good solid performance by our team. I thought our defense was good again,” Brownell said. “I know Hanlan ended up with 15 and (Aaron) Brown ended up with 15, but it wasn’t easy for them. They run so many things for Hanlan that you are guarding them on every possession. If you make a mistake he is going to get a play.”

Blossomgame finished the day with 16 points, which all came in the second half. He was 5 of 9 from the field. Nnoko finished the game with nine points and nine rebounds.

Clemson has now won four of its last five games and will not play again until Wednesday when it visits Florida State for a 9 p.m. tip.
