Almost 24 hours after news broke on Deon Cain’s official visit to Auburn, TheClemsonInsider was in touch with Jayson Roberts, the head coach at Tampa Technical High School.
Roberts told TCI on Monday afternoon that he would be “completely shocked” if Cain does not sign with Clemson on Wednesday.
“And, honestly — not that I ever try to steer a kid anywhere, because at the end of the day, they’re the one that has to spend their four years there and go through whatever they’re going through at those schools — but I would be disappointed, just in the simple fact that you’ve been committed to Clemson for so long and they’ve been as committed to him as he is to them,” Roberts said. “They pretty much shut down the receiver recruiting process after he (committed)…I’d be a little bit disappointed for him to wait all the way until the last week and decide to make a change.
“I can’t think of anything on Clemson’s part that they did to sway him, turn him off or anything. I would be a little bit disappointed if he didn’t sign with them. That’s not my child, so I don’t have any say in that. When I talked to him, I expressed to him that there’s a right way and wrong way to do things, and to just make sure you always do things the right way.”
Dabo Swinney and Tony Elliott stopped by Tampa Tech on Friday, before Cain shipped off to Auburn for his official visit.
“They were made aware of it before he went and everything, so when the reports came out, it wasn’t a big shock to them, because coach Swinney and coach Elliott already had a school visit scheduled for that Friday,” Roberts said. “They came by the school on Friday and met with Deon and myself, kind of visited and talked, talked about the visit. Obviously, they weren’t happy about it, weren’t thrilled about it. But they had a chance to speak with him and talk with him. He explained what it was and where it came from. They felt a lot better about it.”
What exactly was the nature of the visit?
“(Cain) had a bunch of his buddies that all kind of wanted to go somewhere together. That’s pretty much what it was, an opportunity for him and his friends to go out one last time and have a good time together.”
Now, the attention turns to Wednesday.
“We’ll do our signing day ceremony at 1:30 on Wednesday. We’ll do it at 1:30, but I’m pretty sure, as discussed with the coaches, they’ll probably have his faxed in a whole lot earlier than that,” Roberts said.
