Newberry quarterback Shai Werts is in the mix for billing as the top instate quarterback in 2016.
But there’s no guarantee he’ll end up at the position once he moves on to the next level. With Zerrick Cooper already on board with the 2016 Clemson class, Werts is viewed as an athlete by the Tigers’ coaches.
Werts would like to play quarterback, but he won’t pigeon hole himself.
“That’s what I want to do. Like I tell everybody who asks me, I’m not limiting myself to what I can do. I’m just going to go with the flow, see whatever comes to me,” Werts told TheClemsonInsider, after he visited Clemson for the Elite Junior Day.
“Then, at the end of the day, I’ll make the best decision for myself and my parents.”
So far, Werts has an offer from Newberry, but he’s also receiving interest from Georgia Tech and Appalachian State.
Georgia Tech has had Werts on campus a couple of times already, and he expects to return later this month. He’s also taken visits to South Carolina and Appalachian State.
“Georgia Tech, they really like me at quarterback,” Werts said.
Primarily a quarterback since his freshman year, Werts has played elsewhere during his football career.
“I’m an athlete, so I can really play any position when it comes down to being a skill player,” he said.
Shai attended Clemson’s Elite Junior Day in January. For Clemson, defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks and defensive backs coach Mike Reed have served as the primary recruiters for the Tigers.
“They were saying how they liked my film. I should just keep doing what I’m doing and I’m a good player,” Werts said.
