On Friday Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said his team would be locked in when it played Virginia Tech.
Well, he was right. They were locked in on Saturday as they scored the game’s first 10 points and never looked back in a 75-54 victory at Littlejohn Coliseum. The 75 points marked the most points by the Tigers against an ACC foe this year.
It was also Clemson’s first win by 20 or points in an ACC game since beating Wake Forest by 20, 78-58, on Feb. 11, 2012.
With the win the Tigers improved to 15-10 overall and 7-6 in the ACC. Virginia Tech fell to 10-15 and 2-10 in the ACC.
Jordan Roper led all scorers with 21 points, while Jaron Blossomgame added 14 points. Landry Nnoko finished the game with eight points. Rod Hall had nine points and four assists.
The first half was the Tigers best of the season as they scored 41 points on 16 of 33 shooting. Clemson made six first-half three-pointers, including three from Roper.
After a Nnoko basket got the Tigers started, Roper scored the next 11 points and finished the half with 13 points. Three of Ropers first four baskets were from behind the arc as Clemson built a 16-2 lead in the first four minutes and 12 seconds.
Clemson led by as many as 22 points in the opening half. The 41 points were the most points in any half versus an ACC opponent was 42 points against Wake Forest on Feb. 11, 2012.
The Tigers opened the game connecting on their first five three-point attempts and started the second half the same way.
Blossomgame, Donte Grantham, Hall and Roper with two, all connected on three-pointers in the first four minutes as Clemson extended its 19-point half-time lead to 34, 58-24, with 15:55 to play in the game.
The Tigers also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Hokies 38-28. Blossomgame led Clemson with seven rebounds.
Clemson will have a quick turnaround as it travels to Atlanta to play Georgia Tech on Monday at 7 p.m. on ESPNU. Brownell is 9-0 all-time at Clemson against Georgia Tech.
