Instant Replay: Clemson 4 West Virginia 2

By Trey McCurry.

CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (1-1) 4-2 win over West Virginia (1-1) on Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

What happened?

The Tigers got on the board in the top of the first with two hits and a Mountaineer error. West Virginia responded with a run in the third before Clemson took the lead for good with a run in the fifth inning on a sac fly from Steven Duggar. The Tigers added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh on two hits and another Mountaineer error. West Virginia added a single run in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring, but Drew Moyer struck out the final batter to leave the bases loaded and allow Clemson to pick up its first win of the season.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the seventh inning with the Tigers holding a 2-1 lead. Eli White led off the inning with a double in the left field gap before Tyler Slaton grounded back to the pitcher, who tried to get White out at third base but threw the ball away allowing White to score and Slaton to reach second. After Slaton stole third, Chase Pinder picked up his first career RBI on a sac fly to right field to give Clemson two big insurance runs in the inning.

What went right?

Tiger starter Zach Erwin gave Clemson another solid start, going 6.0 innings and allowing a single run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Reliever Alex Schnell was solid in his debut, throwing 2.0 innings of no-hit ball. Seven different Tigers had hits in the contest as Clemson took advantage of a couple of West Virginia miscues to plate a couple runs.

What went wrong?

The Tigers left seven runners on base in the contest, a trend they will need to begin capitalizing on as the season progresses. Moyer had a shaky first appearance in 2015, allowing a run (on a homer) and three total hits before recording his second strikeout of his only inning to secure the win.
