Instant Replay: WV 6 Clemson 1

By Trey McCurry.

CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (1-2) 6-1 setback to West Virginia (2-1) on Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

What happened?

The Mountaineers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning off a Shaun Corso homer that just cleared the left field fence. In the fifth inning, West Virginia added three unearned runs following a costly Tiger error to stretch their lead to 4-0. After the Mountaineers added another run in the seventh, Clemson finally scratched a run across with three straight singles but a double play ended the threat. West Virginia would go on to add another run in the eighth to make the final score 6-1.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the fourth and fifth innings. With the Mountaineers holding a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers appeared to have tied the game when a balk scored a run. However, the umpires got together and determined it was the wrong call (thereby taking the run off the board) and West Virginia escaped still holding a 1-0 lead.

The next half inning, the Mountaineers took advantage of a critical Clemson error to plate three runs (on only two hits) and extend their lead to 4-0.

What went right?

Despite taking the loss, Brody Koerner had a good first weekend start as he allowed a single run on three hits in 4.0 innings with a career high eight strikeouts. Tyler Krieger continued his hot start, going 3-for-3 with a walk while Weston Wilson also had two hits. Reliever Hunter Van Horn had a good outing as well, allowing two hits while striking out three in 1.2 innings.

What went wrong?

The Tigers were unable to get the clutch hit in the contest and, despite having 10 total hits, managed only a single run. Three double plays ended scoring threats and the offense never managed to build an inning. Defensively, Clemson committed three errors that lead to three unearned runs.
