Yellow Jackets snap losing streak to Tigers

By Will Vandervort.

When Demarcus Harrison drained a three-pointer from the top of the key that tied the game with 12:14 to play, it seemed like Clemson was going to do what it has done a lot lately to Georgia Tech – find a way to win the game.

But Tech had other plans.

Clemson missed seven straight shots and turned the basketball over twice as the Yellow Jackets used a 14-0 run to snap a 10-game losing streak to the Tigers with a 63-52 victory in Atlanta.

Georgia Tech had not beaten Clemson since a 66-64 victory in 2010, which was also in Atlanta.

The Tigers (15-11, 7-7 ACC) have now lost three of their last four games after winning four games prior to this current stretch. Clemson never led in the contest.

Harrison’s three tied the game at 32, but Clemson went the next four minutes and 45 seconds without a single point. During that time, the Yellow Jackets started hitting everything.

Josh Heath kissed one shot off the glass to keep Georgia Tech in front and then Demarco Cox made a layup in transition to extend the lead to four points. Baskets by Robert Sampson and Cox and then two free throws by Charles Mitchell up the lead to 44-32 with 8:03 to play.

Marcus Georges-Hunt then got a fastbreak opportunity on the next possession to extend the lead to 46-32 with 7:27 to go in the game.

Georgia Tech (12-15, 3-11 ACC) scored eight of the next 10 points to up the lead to 18 points at 54-36 with 4:56 to play. Georges-Hunt and Quinton Stephens made back-to-back threes to get the lead to 18 points.

The Tigers extended their defense after that and used three straight Georgia Tech turnovers to cut the lead to nine points. Rod Hall made three straight free throws to begin the run after being fouled on a three-point attempt. Then Austin Ajukwa stole the ball and hit a three-pointer, which he followed with another steal and another jumper. That made the score 54-45 with 3:12 to play. They got no closer.

Ajukwa finished the night with 10 points, while Jaron Blossomgame scored 10 as well. Heath scored 14 points to lead all scorers.

Clemson used a 5-0 run to end the first half as Donte Grantham drained a three from the left wing, while Blossomgame drove the lane for a layup that made the score 23-21 with 1:36 to play in the opening half. The Tigers trailed by as many seven points in the first 20 minutes.

Blossomgame twice had a chance to tie the game before halftime, but a floater with 59 seconds to play was just off the mark, while his next shot rimmed in and out as time expired for halftime.

Georgia Tech took a 21-14 lead to complete a 6-0 run with 5:09 to play when Georges-Hunt made a layup.

Tech opened the game with an 8-2 run, while Clemson missed eight of its first nine shots. Jordan Roper made the Tigers first two shots of the game, but he made just one field goal after that.
