Beasley shines at NFL Combine

Prior to this weekend’s NFL’s Scouting Combine NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said Vic Beasley was either going to earn a high-dollar value or was going to show there were questions on his ability to be a starting defensive end in the NFL.

Beasley proved he can be very valuable.

The Clemson defensive end was the talk of the combine on Sunday morning as defensive ends and tackles worked out for scouts, coaches, general managers and owners in Indianapolis.

“We got about a four-minute break a couple of segments ago and I ran outside and I ran into a bunch of coaches and GMs and guys I have known for years and the conversation was the same with each and every one of them. ‘Wow! How about Beasley?! How about Beasley?!’ Everything was about, ‘How about Beasley?’”

How about Vic Beasley?

After weighing in a 246 pounds and being measured at 6-foot-3, he tied for first on the bench press with 35 reps of 225 pounds on Saturday. He also had a vertical jump of 41 inches and an arm measurement of 32.5 inches.

On Sunday, Beasley ran a 4.53 in the 40-yard dash.

“You are talking about 246 (pounds) benching 225 (pounds) 35 times. Running a 4.53, jumping 41 inches (vertical)… Everything he did today was impressive and better than expected,” said Mayock.

“The guy that really helped himself today and will force all of us to go back and double check the tape, I want to know what he actually weighed when he played at Clemson this year? That is my first question. What did you weigh and were you able to keep the weight throughout the season? Or is this 246 manufactured weight that you can’t keep? But, he was definitely the story this morning.”

Beasley played around 240 pounds during the 2014 season, while leading the Tigers with 12 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss. The two-time First-Team All-America also batted down three passes and caused two fumbles, while recovering and returning one for a touchdown.

“Vic Beasley of Clemson owned the morning,” said NFL Network host Rich Eisen. “The buzz this morning is all about this Clemson Tiger.”

Heading into the combine, many of the so-called experts said Beasley might be drafted anywhere from No. 8 to No. 29 in the 2015 NFL Draft on April 29-May 2. But those expectations could change after what Beasley did in Indianapolis this weekend.

“He had a monster morning and helped himself probably as much or more than anyone we have seen so far this week,” Mayock said.
