Instant Replay: Clemson 10 Maine 2

By Trey McCurry.

AUGUSTA, GA — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (4-2) 10-2 win over Maine (1-6) on Saturday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

What happened?

The Black Bears scored the game’s first run in the top of the second inning, but the Tigers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. After Maine retook the lead with a run in the fourth, Clemson scored a run in the fifth to again tie the game. In the sixth inning, the Tigers took the lead for good with a two-run inning. Clemson would go on to add two more runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth to put the game away.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the bottom of the sixth inning. In a tie game, Chris Okey got the rally started with a one-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Weston Wilson singled to center to plate Okey with the go-ahead run and eventually came in to score on a sac fly from Andrew Cox to put the Tigers ahead for good.

What went right?

Clemson starter Brody Koerner battled the entire game to earn his first win of the season. In his second start of the season, Koerner allowed two runs (both earned) on eight hits while recording three strikeouts in 8.0 innings. Offensively, eight different Tigers recorded a hit with four of those players picking up multiple hits. Chase Pinder had a team-high three hits while Tyler Slaton, Chris Okey, and Andrew Cox each had two hits.

What went wrong?

Clemson started the game off slow, but was able to come back twice and pull away late for a relatively easy win. The Tigers committed two errors behind Koerner, but the junior was able to pitch out of several jams and avoided any damage from the extra base runners.
