Venables offers athlete from up north

During a phone call on Friday night, Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables let Jacob Morgenstern know that he had an offer from the Tigers.

“He was probably the most excited that any coach has ever been after seeing my film,” Morgenstern said. “Just hearing him talk about me was awesome.”

The 6-4, 210-pound athlete from St. Luke’s High School in New Canaan, Connecticut also owns holds from Boston College, Buffalo, UConn, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Temple, Wisconsin and Yale.

“(Venables) followed me on Twitter. Then, shortly after, that’s when he made the call. He probably followed me earlier that week,” Morgenstern said.

Rutgers, Maryland and Penn State are also in contact. And, even though he hasn’t been to Clemson, Morgenstern is familiar with the school.

“I know they’re a top 20 public university. They finished ranked, I think, 15th,” he said. “It’s an incredible school and you have an incredible football program. You know, at Clemson, you’re going to get the best of both worlds. It’s great weather down there.

“Just to know such an incredible program would even consider me, it’s truly humbling.”

If Morgenstern is unable to visit this spring, he plans to make it down in the summer.

In 2015, Morgenstern has already been to Boston College and Pennsylvania. A trip to Princeton is lined up. After that, he’ll turn his attention to baseball.

As a junior, Morgenstern caught 23 catches for 682 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also rushed 32 times for 382 yards with five touchdowns.

Morgenstern had 65 tackles, five interceptions, three forced fumbles. On special teams, he returned two punts for touchdowns.

“(Venables) said that I could play on either side of the ball in college, wherever I really want,” Morgenstern said. “He thinks that I’m that type of athlete, but I could play offense or defense. That’s awesome that I have options, so he really didn’t specify.”
