Koerner powers Tigers over SC

COLUMBIA – Brody Koerner pitched a gem for the Tigers Monday afternoon as they defeated South Carolina 7-0 at Carolina Stadium.  The Tigers won the regular season series with the Gamecocks for the first time since 2010.

Brody went 9.0 innings for the Tigers and only gave up four hits, no runs and no earned runs.  Koerner had six strikeouts and only three walks on 116 pitches.

For the third time this series Clemson jumped out to the lead early.  In the second  Chase Pinder reached on an error with two outs.  Andrew Cox singled up the middle advancing Pinder to second.  Eli White singled to right center to score Pinder and put Clemson up 1-0.  Tyler Slaton grounded out to end the threat.

The Tigers added another run in the top of the third.  Tyler Krieger singled with one out.  Steven Duggar singled to right and Krieger just beat a throw to third.  Chris Okey hit a sacrifice fly to right field to put Clemson up 2-0.

In the top of the seventh Clemson added to their lead.  With one out Reed Rohlman singled to left.  Tyler Krieger hit a shot off the pitcher and reached on a single advancing Rohlman to third.  Steven Duggar hit one off the left center wall.  Chris Okey grounded out to second scoring Krieger.  Okey looked to be clearly safe at first, but was called out.  Steven Duggar scored on a wild pitch and the Tigers led 5-0 after the top of the seventh.

The Tigers added some insurance in the ninth inning.  Tyler Slaton was hit by a pitch and then stole second.  Reed Rohlman hit a shot off the left center wall for a double to score Slaton.  Rohlman scored from second on a wild pitch and an error to make it 7-0.

In the three game series Clemson outscored South Carolina 19-8.

Clemson moved to 7-3 on the season with the win.  The Tigers return to Doug Kingsmore Tuesday afternoon at 5 PM to play Wintrop.
