After putting a bow on the 2015 signing class, Dabo Swinney told reporters that Clemson would sign a punter with the 2016 haul.
Among the potential candidates to net an offer from Clemson is Blake Gillikin, who was in Clemson earlier this month for Junior Day. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound punter from Westminster High School in Atlanta spoke with TheClemsonInsider shortly after he wrapped up his first visit to Tigertown.
“I really liked it. I thought the facilities were really nice. It was first-class,” Gillikin said, “And hearing the coaches talk was really great. I got to hear how genuine they were and I really liked the family vibe I got from them.”
He added, “I thought that the campus tour was really great. We got to see a lot of how the life of an athlete would unfold. The academic support seems really great and that’s something I’m really high on. I’m an academic guy.”
Clemson will host him again in the summer for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp. A strong performance at the camp could net Gillikin an offer from the Tigers.
“I talked to the special teams coordinator, coach (Danny) Pearman, and they said the camp would be very big,” Gillikin said. “They’re really high on, especially punters and kickers, to come kick in front of the coaches, to see how they perform under pressure like that.”
In total, he plans to hit up about 10 camps this summer, including Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Stanford.
“Most of the schools I’m talking to said if I came to the camp and performed like I did on my film that an offer would definitely, probably be on the table,” Gillikin said.
According to Kohl’s Kicking Camps, Gillikin is the No. 4 overall punter in the class of 2016.
“Gillikin showed D-1 leg strength at the 2015 UC Challenge. The ball jumps off his foot very well. He has good steps and natural rhythm in his punting approach. Blake is a confident punter who is very competitive. His ability was apparent throughout the camp. He likes the big stage and will be one of the best punters in his class.”
