GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State’s DJ Stewart and Miami’s David Thompson have been named ACC Baseball Co-Players of the Week, while Clemson’s Matthew Crownover was voted as Pitcher of the Week.
Stewart helped Florida State to a 2-2 record against two top 10 teams on the road. The junior outfielder finished the week hitting .417 with five hits in 12 at-bats, tallying three home runs, seven runs scored, 10 RBIs and nine walks with an on-base percentage of .667 and a slugging percentage of 1.167. On Saturday, Stewart registered a key two-out single to give the Seminoles a five-run cushion in the sixth and broke an 8-8 tie with a solo home run in the eighth. Stewart finished the weekend series against the Cavaliers reaching base on 12 of his 16 plate appearances.
Thompson had another sensational week for Miami, powering the Hurricanes to a 3-1 mark including a series victory over Wake Forest. The junior connected for four home runs over the week, including grand slams against Army and Wake Forest, and set a career high with seven RBIs in a series-opening win over the Demon Deacons. He had two multi-home run games, and extended his hitting streak to a career-best 14 games with a triple in the series finale. This is his second straight ACC Player of the Week award.
Crownover pitched 8.1 scoreless innings of five-hit ball with seven strikeouts without allowing a walk in Clemson’s 4-0 win in 10 innings Friday against Virginia Tech. He faced just 30 batters, four over the minimum. A junior from Ringgold, Georgia, he did not factor in the decision, but enabled the Tigers to win on Chris Okey’s grand slam in the 10th inning. On the season, he is 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA and .163 opponents’ batting average along with 42 strikeouts against only 11 walks in 41.1 innings pitched over six starts.
