BUFORD, Ga. – Dabo Swinney has a relatively simple recruiting theory: Just convince get the prospect on campus and let Clemson sell itself.
Nygel Edmonds, a four-star cornerback, liked what he saw while in town earlier this month for Junior Day.
“It was definitely a great experience,” Edmonds told TheClemsonInsider, after Sunday’s Opening Regional.
“One thing that they normally say is their main job is to get you on campus, to get the recruits on campus. After that, they’ll love it. At first, it was kind of weird having someone say that. But once I got on campus, I believed them.”
A junior at Chattanooga-McCallie School, Edmonds has offers from several of the country’s top programs, including Auburn, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
“It was a great experience, a humbling experience actually,” he said of the experience in Clemson. “Just the environment itself, the coaches and I met a couple of the players. They’re real cool.
“Also, on top of all that, just the academic part of it. They explained how top-notch the academics are, and that’s definitely my No. 1 thing I’m looking for with a school.”
Edmonds will head up to Ohio State this Friday for his second visit of the year. No further trips have been scheduled.
“We’re good planners, so we’ll plan. We’ll definitely plan on visiting more schools before this school year is over with, but also hitting a lot more schools in the summer,” he said. “That’s our main goal, to kind of spread out across the whole country.”
For now, there is no list of favorites, but that will change over the next couple of months.
“I haven’t really narrowed it out yet because I still want to visit a couple of more schools, look at a few more schools around the country before I give out a top five,” Edmonds said. “I probably won’t give that until the end of the school year or near the end of the summer.”
Edmonds has yet to set a specific timeline to decide.
“Definitely, I don’t think I’m one of the guys that is going to wait until signing day and sign and not have a verbal commitment,” he said. “I’m definitely, probably, going to commit before…I’m not sure, it could be before the football season.
“I’m still discussing that with my parents as a family decision.”
