BUFORD, Ga. – According to Rivals and 247, Jamyest Williams is a four-star athlete.
Williams is listed by 247 as the No. 9 athlete in the class of 2017 while Rivals has yet to post a ranking.
The coaches at Clemson are in the same boat. Led by defensive backs coach Mike Reed, the staff is still evaluating which position he might best fit.
“They kind of don’t know yet. They asked me what I want to play,” Williams told TheClemsonInsider on Sunday morning. “But, right now, they like me as an athlete, both ways player.”
The sophomore from Archer High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia worked out as a defensive back at The Opening Regional in Atlanta on Sunday. After the camp, he was named Best DB, which earned him an invite to The Opening.
“Right now, DB, because I think I’m a dominant DB. I think nobody can beat me. I just feel like I’m dominant,” Williams said, when asked which position he would prefer.
Also from Archer: Williams isn’t the only member of the Archer secondary who’s getting looks from some of the country’s top programs. There’s also 2016 cornerback Dylan Singleton and 2017 safety Isaiah Pryor.
Pryor is a 6-2, 190-pound four-star with offers Clemson, Ohio State and LSU, among others. He was in Clemson earlier this month to watch spring practice.
“It was good. I loved the atmosphere, got to watch them practice, so I got a good feel for Clemson,” Pryor said.
Junior Day guest: Four-star defensive end Malik Herring has been to Clemson, Alabama and Georgia this spring. He was on campus in Tigertown earlier this month for Junior Day.
“I loved it,” he said. “The new facility that they’re building, it’s going to be great. The coaches, they treated me great, they made me feel like I was at home. The academics are great. It was great overall.”
Listed at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, Herring is ranked by 247 as the No. 1 weak-side defensive end in the class of 2017.
Familiar with the area: Jake Bentley is quite familiar with the Clemson football experience. Before Monday, his last trip to Tigertown was in the fall for the UNC game.
“I kind of grew up going to games and stuff, so it was fun. Great atmosphere, great coaches,” Bentley said. “I’ve known coach (Jeff) Scott for a long time, so it’s always good to go up there and see him, see everything.”
Currently on spring break from Opelika High School in Alabama, Clemson hosted Bentley for a visit on Monday. On Thursday, he’ll head to Columbia for a visit to South Carolina.
