Clemson, SC – Wake Forest defeated the Tigers 8-2 Friday night at Doug Kingsmore.
Matthew Crownover went 5.2 innings for Clemson and gave up four hits, three runs and three earned runs. Clay Bates had his first appearance of the year for the Tigers and went .2 innings and gave up one hit, two runs and two earned runs.
Clemson took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Tyler Krieger walked to start the inning and then stole second. Chris Okey singled to left and the Tigers led 1-0 after four.
Wake Forest took the lead in the top of the sixth. With two outs the Deacons rallied for three runs. The first run came as Reed Rohlman dove for a ball but he didn’t make the catch and the ball got past him to score the first run. Wake scored their next two on walks.
The Tigers did their best Bad News Bears impersonation in the seventh as they allowed four runs thanks to three errors. After the top of the seventh the Deacons led 7-1.
Wake Forest added another insurance run on a solo home run in the top of the ninth.
Clemson fell to 12-12 overall and 4-6 in the ACC with the loss. Clemson and Wake Forest play game two Saturday at 2:30 PM.
