CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (12-13, 4-7 ACC) 7-3 setback to Wake Forest (19-10, 6-5 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Tigers got the scoring going when Tyler Slaton hit the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning for a homer to the Cajun Café. The Demon Deacons responded with four runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. After Wake Forest added another run in the seventh, Clemson answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Chase Pinder led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before coming in to score on a two-out single by Slaton. The Tigers added another run in the eighth on a homer by Steven Duggar, but were unable to get any closer as they fell for the second straight day.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the third and fourth innings as the Demon Deacons scored six runs on seven hits and a Clemson error to break open the game.
What went right?
Slaton paced the Tigers eight hit attack with three hits, including a double and a homer while also recording two RBI. Duggar picked up the other RBI on his first homer of the season. Jake Long and Taylor Vetzel each retired all three batters they faced in relief.
What went wrong?
Clemson starter Brody Koerner was unable to make it out of the fourth inning as he allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits. Despite scoring first for the second straight game, the Tigers were unable to hold onto a lead as they stranded seven runners in the contest.
