2017 Introduction: Montrece Gatling

North Carolina’s Havelock High School has produced some pretty quality football prospects over the last couple of years.

South Carolina wide receiver Pharoh Cooper was under-rated by most services when he came out of Havelock, but he’s had a stellar career so far. After Cooper was Derrell Scott, who originally went to Tennessee, but has since transferred to East Carolina.

Up next is 2016 outside linebacker Keion Joyner, a five-star prospect, according to Scout, Rivals and 247.

After Joyner is 2017 athlete Montrece Gatling, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound prospect who plays running back and cornerback for Havelock.

As a sophomore, he rushed 26 times for 170 yards with two touchdowns. On defense, he recorded 48 tackles, six pass breakups and an interception.

“I’m really looking forward to hearing from Clemson, N.C. State, UNC and South Carolina,” Gatling told TheClemsonInsider, during a recent interview.

He’s particularly high on Clemson

“I know Cornell Powell, the receiver from J.H. Rose, he’s committed there and they have a good coach, too,” Gatling said.

Gatling’s father, Shannon, told TCI that a time of 11.05 in the 100-meter dash qualified him for the North Carolina Regionals.

The sophomore recently increased his squat max to 400 pounds.

“He is continuing to get faster and stronger to hopefully be one of the top recruits in the nation,” the elder Gatling said.
