CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (15-14, 6-7 ACC) 5-2 win over North Carolina (17-132, 6-7 ACC) on Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Tigers got the scoring going in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out rally. Tyler Krieger hit an infield single and Reed Rohlman followed with a RBI double to plate Krieger. Chris Okey then doubled to score Rohlman and give Clemson a 2-0 lead. The Tigers added to their lead in the third inning. Steven Duggar led off with a single, moved to second on a balk, and Krieger walked. Rohlman reached second on a dropped fly ball that allowed Duggar to score and Krieger to move to third base. Following an out, Chase Pinder doubled down the left field line to plate both Krieger and Rohlman to extend the Clemson lead to 5-0. The Tar Heels cut into the lead with two-run seventh inning to make the score 5-2 but were unable to get any closer as the Tigers held on for the Friday night win.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the third inning. Holding a 2-0 lead, Clemson added three runs on two hits and a North Carolina error to give Matthew Crownover all the cushion he would need to pick up his third ACC win of the year.
What went right?
Crownover earned his fifth win of the year by tossing 7.0 innings, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Taylor Vetzel earned his first save by tossing 2.0 scoreless innings. Okey and Eli White paced the Tigers nine-hit attack with two hits each while Pinder had a game-high two RBI.
What went wrong?
A costly error eventually allowed two unearned runs to score in the seventh inning. Clemson stranded seven runners in the contest, including four in scoring position.
