All hope had seemed lost for Clemson when an error and a defensive blunder allowed North Carolina to take a two-run lead in the top of 11th inning Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
But the Tar Heels returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning when an error and four walks allowed the tying and winning runs to score, allowing Clemson to steal a 5-4 victory in Game 2 of the three-game series.
With the win, the Tigers claim the series thanks to Friday’s 5-2 victory. It marks the first time Clemson has won a home series this year and evens its record at Doug Kingsmore at 8-8.
The Tigers (16-14, 7-7 ACC) pulled with in one run, 4-3, in the 11th when Steven Duggar scored on a wild pitch after he, Tyler Krieger and Reed Rohlman walked to load the bases with one out. After the wild pitch scored Duggar, UNC intentionally walked Chris Okey to load the bases again.
That set up Eli White who reached on a muffed throw by the Tar Heels’ first baseman, which allowed Krieger and Rohlman to score the tying and winning runs.
Before all the extra inning craziness, Zack Erwin pitched a gem for the Tigers. Erwin went 9.0 innings and only gave up nine hits, two runs and one earned run. He had a season high 11 strikeouts on 117 pitches.
Reed Rohlman went 3-3 at the plate Saturday night. The Tigers only managed five hits in on the night.
North Carolina (17-13, 6-8 ACC) took the lead 1-0 in the first thanks to two Clemson errors.
The Tigers got on the board in the fourth. Tyler Slaton doubled down the right field line. With one out Tyler Krieger doubled down the left field line to score Slaton. Reed Rohlman singled and Krieger stopped at third but came home to score as North Carolina tried to get Rohlman going to second. After four Clemson led 2-1.
The Heels tied the game in the eighth with a run.
The Tigers threatened in the ninth. Reed Rohlman hit a one out single. He advanced to third on a bad pickoff throw. Eli White struckout to end the threat.
North Carolina took the lead in the top of the eleventh. Wilson had his second error of the day and made a bad throw to put the leadoff batter on. With one out the Tigers just missed turning a double play. North Carolina scored two on the play to take a 4-2 lead.
The Tigers then drew three consecutive walks, used a pass ball, another walks and a Tar Heels’ error to win the game. The two teams will play Game 3 on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
