CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (16-16) 3-2 loss to Georgia (19-15) on Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Bulldogs struck first, and fast, as Stephen Wrenn hit the first pitch of the game out of the park for a homer to give Georgia a 1-0 lead. The Tigers answered in the second as Chase Pinder hit his third homer of the season, a solo shot, to tie the game at one. Clemson took a 2-1 lead in the sixth as Chris Okey and Pinder had back-to-back infield singles before pinch hitter Robert Jolly hit a two-out double down the left field line to plate Okey. The Bulldogs tied the game with a run on two hits in the eighth. Georgia plated the winning run on a sac fly in the ninth to take a 3-2 decision.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the top of the ninth inning. After the Bulldogs had tied the game in the previous frame, the leadoff batter reached on a throwing error. After a stolen base, a single moved the go-ahead run to third. The next batter lined a sac fly to center to plate the winning run as Tyler Slaton’s throw was just up the line and the runner slid past Okey’s tag.
What went right?
Jake Long gave the Tigers a solid midweek start, allowing a single run on four hits in 6.0 innings. Pat Krall had four strikeouts in 2.0 innings and Alex Bostic retired the only batter he faced. Okey, Pinder, and Eli White each had two hits to pace Clemson’s offensive attack as the Tigers outhit Georgia 9-7.
What went wrong?
The Tigers had three errors in the game, with the last one allowing the eventual winning (unearned) run to reach base before coming in to score. Clemson missed several chances throughout the game to score runs as they stranded eight runners in the contest, including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
