Instant Replay: Charleston Southern 4 Clemson 3

By Trey McCurry.

CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (16-17) 4-3, 10-inning loss to Charleston Southern (13-18) on Wednesday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

What happened?

The Tigers started the scoring in the first inning. After three straight walks to Eli White, Steven Duggar, and Tyler Krieger, Reed Rohlman bounced a single through the left side to plate two runs and give Clemson an early lead. The Buccaneers would cut the lead in half in the sixth inning with a run and tie the game in the next frame with an unearned run. Clemson answered in the bottom of the frame. Adam Renwick hit a one-out single and Duggar drew a two-out walk before Krieger doubled in the left-center gap to plate Renwick and give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. Charleston Southern tied the game again in the ninth with a run on three hits to force extra innings. In the tenth, the Buccaneers loaded the bases with one out and a sac fly to right field scored the eventual winning run.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the bottom of the fourth and eighth innings. In the fourth frame, Chris Okey and Drew Wharton each singled to start the frame. After a sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Clemson couldn’t get the clutch hit to plate either runner. In the eighth inning, Okey and Wharton again reached base to start the frame and moved to scoring position on a sac bunt. Like the fourth inning, Clemson couldn’t get a big hit as two strikeouts stranded both runners.

What went right?

Clate Schmidt gave the Tigers a solid midweek start, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits in 7.0 innings. Okey was 3-for-5 on the day while Krieger had two doubles to lead Clemson’s eight hit attack.

What went wrong?

Four relievers were unable to close out the game as they allowed two runs on five hits over the last three frames. The Tigers committed three errors for the second straight game and stranded nine runners, with all nine being left in scoring position.
