Overton spends the night in Clemson

Four-star wide receiver Diondre Overton, one of the few remaining offensive targets for Clemson in 2016, spent Wednesday night in Clemson.

The Greensboro-Page junior arrived to Clemson around 2 o’clock that afternoon. He went to the team meeting, sat in on the wide receiver meeting then watched practice.

“Sitting in on the meetings really showed me how the coaches really interact and how coaches determine playing time,” Overton told TheClemsonInsider on Thursday afternoon.

“Because nothing lies on film and when people see themselves on film, they see the progress that they’re making, so coach Jeff Scott, he pointed out some stuff, like what wide receivers should know, so that was a great experience for me seeing how they do things.”

At practice, Overton was impressed with Dabo Swinney and his treatment of the players.

“He never had a bad attitude. He stayed positive and energetic. He had no chill. He was out there doing push-ups with the team every time they had to do push-ups,” Overton said. “He’s a great coach. He loves to interact with his players, so that what’s I love about Clemson. I love the way they practice. It’s a very up-tempo practice throughout the whole thing.”

The 6-foot-5, 195-pound prospect spent plenty of time watching Scott work with the wide receivers.

“Coach Scott, that was pretty impressive to me, because it just showed me some stuff I didn’t know,” Overton said. “He teaches his wide receivers some things that my wide receivers coach doesn’t team me. It was just good to learn some certain things from watching him coach the wide receivers.”

After practice, Overton attended the weekly family dinner with the team and coaches. He then spent time with Mike Williams and a few other players.

Before leaving on Thursday, Overton had a 1-on-1 in Swinney’s office. He also spoke with Scott and his father, Brad.

“They just were telling me how much they need me, how much they need a guy over 6-5, because that would really complete their wide receiver corps. They told me how important I am to Clemson and how much they’re recruiting me,” Overton said. “It was just good to hear. And they just told me that they would love to have me.

“They also told me to just choose the best college for me, don’t rush.”

Overton will visit either Alabama or East Carolina next weekend. His brother, Montese, is a senior outside linebacker at ECU.

Clemson leads Tennessee while N.C. State and South Carolina are “kind of tied” for third.
