The last big-time recruit from Sliver Bluff was on the field in Clemson’s spring game on Saturday.
Junior cornerback Cordrea Tankersley, who’s expected to start for the Tigers this season, was a four-star when he signed in 2012.
Up next from the Aiken high school is Devontae Davis. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound 2017 defensive end was in the stands for Saturday’s Orange and White game.
“They wanted me to come before, but I didn’t have a chance, so that was my first time,” Davis told TheClemsonInsider, after the visit.
So what stood out?
“The stadium and the academic part of the tour.”
Davis spoke with defensive backs coach Mike Reed, his area recruiter, and defensive ends coach Marion Hobby.
“Just get my grades and that was really it,” Davis said, when asked about those conversations.
Reed stopped by Silver Bluff twice last year and dropped his business card off for Davis on the second visit. And that’s cool with Davis, because he’s impressed with the direction of the Clemson program.
“I think it’s good. I like it,” he said.
Davis went to Florida State when he was a freshman, but it was not a recruiting visit, so Saturday’s trip to Clemson was his first as a major college recruit.
Several schools, along with Clemson, are already expressing interest: Florida State, Georgia, UNC, Nebraska, Utah and N.C. State.
Davis, who grew up pulling for Georgia, knows he will visit South Carolina and UNC this summer.
As a sophomore, he had 60 tackles and 10 sacks.
