Coming out of Oak Hill Academy, Shelton Mitchell was ranked by Scout.com as the No. 75 overall player in the class of 2014.
The four-star prospect was also the No. 15 point guard in the country.
Mitchell visited Clemson three times, during his freshman year, again as a sophomore and once more as a junior at Cuthbertson High School in Waxhaw, North Carolina.
By January of 2013, Mitchell was committed to Wake Forest, but things changed just over a year later when Jeff Bzdelik was fired. After Mitchell was released from his letter-of-intent, he signed with Vanderbilt over Missouri, N.C. State and California.
After averaging 4.3 points and 3.3 assists during his only season as a Commodore, Mitchell is looking to relocate back to the Carolinas. Clemson, N.C. State, Charlotte and East Carolina are in the mix for the 6-3, 186-pound point guard.
Clemson will have him on campus this weekend. For now, it’s the only trip that’s been scheduled.
“I know they’re really good guys. I know they have my best interest (in mind), so that’s the main thing I know about them,” Mitchell said of Clemson head coach Brad Brownell and assistant Steve Smith.
“Coach Brownell recruited me for a long time and I’ve known coach Smith for a long time also.”
Mitchell will look to find the place that’s most comfortable for him.
“Basically, just knowing that it’s a place that I can call home really,” Mitchell said, “And a coaching staff that I can really trust. If it’s a school that fits me, that’s really it.”
During his previous visits to Clemson, Mitchell’s didn’t see much beyond Littlejohn Coliseum and Memorial Stadium.
“I didn’t really see the campus or where the players stayed or anything, I was either at the football stadium or the gym,” Mitchell said.
Because of NCAA transfer rules, Mitchell will have to sit out the 2015-16 season before completing his final three years of eligibility.
