It’s do-or-die for Clemson baseball coach Jack Leggett.
On Monday, The Clemson Insider reported Leggett told his team on the bus ride to the airport last Friday, as it got set to fly to Boston, that if things did not get turned around he was not going to be back as their head coach next season.
Though most of the players at the time felt this was a possibility, based on the reports of Leggett’s conversation with athletic director Dan Radakovich last June, the reality of it had not set in until Leggett brought it up on the bus. For Leggett, a guy who keeps matters like that close to the vest, to bring that up and to do it in the way that he did – it was an eye opener.
When a reporter following last night’s 14-2 victory over Western Carolina tried to ask if there is a sense of urgency for the Tigers heading into the last 19 games of the season, Leggett did not hesitate to agree.
“There is a sense of urgency,” he said. “I don’t think there is anything wrong with our players understanding that. They understand that so I think we have the right mindset and hopefully we will play well again tonight and into the weekend.”
Since Friday’s bus ride, the Tigers (19-18) have won three of the last four and all three wins have been in convincing fashion – as they should against two teams with losing records.
