Instant Replay – Clemson 7 Gardner-Webb 5

CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s win over Gardner-Webb  on Wednesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

 

 

 

What happened?

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. After two fly outs, Andrew Cox reached on a fielding error and Eli White reached on an infield single. Steven Duggar doubled down the right field line scoring both runners and giving Clemson a 2-0 lead. Tyler Krieger and Reed Rohlman followed with run-scoring singles to double the advantage to 4-0. After the Runnin’ Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the fourth, the Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Tyler Slaton doubled down the first base line and came in to score on Glenn Batson’s RBI single to extend the Clemson lead to 5-1. The Tigers added two insurance runs in the fifth inning. Krieger hit a one-out single and Rohlman picked up his second RBI with a double in the left field gap. Chase Pinder followed with a two-out double to plate Rohlman and give the Tigers a 7-1 advantage. Gardner-Webb staged a rally in the ninth, scoring four runs on a Clemson error and a three-run homer, but Pat Krall came out of the bullpen to shut down the rally and give Clemson the win.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the third inning. Clemson took advantage of two two-out errors by the Runnin’ Bulldogs with four straight hits to take an early 4-0 lead.

What went right?

Clate Schmidt gave the Tigers another solid midweek start, allowing one run on four hits in 7.0 innings to earn his first win of the season. Pat Krall picked up his second save by shutting down a Gardner-Webb rally in the ninth. Krieger and Rohlman paced Clemson’s 10-hit attack with two hits each while Duggar and Rohlman each had two RBI. 

What went wrong?

Alex Schnell struggled in relief as he allowed four runs (three earned) on two hits in 1.0 innings. A Tiger error in the ninth allowed one of the runs to score and the big blow was a three-run homer down the right field line.
