CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (22-18, 11-9 ACC) series-clinching 8-1 win over Duke (22-17, 5-15 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Blue Devils scored a run on two hits in the first and the Tigers answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Steven Duggar and Tyler Krieger each had one-out singles and Reed Rohlman followed with a RBI single to plate Duggar. Chris Okey hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Krieger and gave Clemson a 2-1 lead. The Tigers blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Okey led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a throwing error. Chase Pinder singled to put runners on the corners and Tyler Slaton followed with a RBI single to score Okey. After two outs, Eli White drew a walk to load the bases and Duggar followed with a bases-clearing double to extend the lead to 6-1. Krieger then doubled down the first base line to plate Duggar and give Clemson a 7-1 lead. The Tigers would add another run in the eighth on a bases-loaded balk to give them a doubleheader sweep.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the fourth inning. Clemson used five hits and a Duke error to break open a 2-1 game and give starter Zack Erwin all the support he would need.
What went right?
Erwin was outstanding, allowing a single run on five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in 8.2 innings while Pat Krall retired the final batter to complete the game. Duggar, Krieger, and Pinder each had two hits to pace a 10-hit attack while Duggar had a game-high three RBI.
What went wrong?
Besides allowing a first inning run, very little went wrong for the Tigers as they played solid defense and stranded only five runners in the contest.
