ATLANTA, GA — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (22-29, 11-10 ACC) 4-2 setback to Georgia Tech (25-16, 10-12 ACC) on Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
What happened?
The Tigers scored first with a single run in the second inning. Chris Okey led off with a walk and Chase Pinder reached on catcher’s interference. After a sac bunt, Glenn Batson hit a fly ball down the right field line and the catcher was unable to corral the throw to give Clemson a 1-0 lead. The Tigers added a run to their lead in the fifth inning. Tyler Slaton led off the inning with a single and Batson doubled off the wall and moved to third on the throw home as Slaton was caught at the plate. Andrew Cox followed with a single to plate Batson and give Clemson a 2-0 lead. After the Yellow Jackets scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 2-1, Georgia Tech plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-2 win in the series opener.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the top of the fifth inning. With the Tigers holding a 1-0 lead, they appeared poised to add to their lead with back-to-back leadoff hits. On the second hit, Slaton tried to score and was out at the plate after a good relay from the Yellow Jacket outfield. Cox followed with a single to center that would have scored both runs, but instead Clemson was only able to get a single run across in the inning.
What went right?
Matthew Crownover had another quality start, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in 7.0 innings. The bottom third of the lineup was productive as they had three of the Tigers five hits along with a double, run, and RBI.
What went wrong?
