CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (23-20, 12-10 ACC) 11-3 win over Georgia Tech (25-17, 10-13 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
What happened?
The Yellow Jackets scored a first inning run to take an early lead, but the Tigers answered with a three-run frame in the top of the third. After a walk and fielder’s choice gave Clemson a runner on base, Eli White hit a two-run homer to left to put the Tigers on top 2-1. After an out, Tyler Krieger would follow with a solo shot to right center to give Clemson a 3-1 advantage. White hit another homer, this one a solo shot, in the fifth to extend the lead to 4-1. Georgia Tech cut the lead to 4-2 with a run in the sixth, but the Tigers responded with a run in the seventh as White hit a one-out triple and came in to score on a sac fly from Steven Duggar and make the Clemson lead 5-2. Following another Yellow Jacket run in the seventh, the Tigers responded with a three-run eighth inning highlighted by a two-out, two-run single from Duggar. Clemson put the game away with three more runs in the ninth as Andrew Cox had a RBI single, White was hit by a pitch for a RBI, and Duggar picked up another RBI on a fielders choice to make the final score 11-3 in favor of the Tigers.
Game-Changing Moment:
There were two momentum changes for Clemson in the game. White got the offense going with his first homer of the day in the third inning and then Duggar provided a big insurance hit with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth to give the Tigers a 7-3 lead.
What went right?
Erwin had another good start, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings. White paced the offense with three hits (a triple and two homers), four runs, and four RBI. Duggar also had four RBI while Krieger and Cox each had two hits in Clemson’s 13-hit attack.
What went wrong?
It’s hard to find much fault in an eight-run win, but the Tigers did strand 11 runners in the contest (including six in scoring position). Clemson also had a couple issues on the base paths as they had a runner caught stealing, a runner picked off, a runner thrown out at home, and hit into a double play.
