SPARTANBURG, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (24-24) 17-9 loss at Wofford (33-16) on Tuesday night at Russell King Field.
What happened?
The Tigers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with four runs on three hits and two errors in the top of the first inning. The Terriers wasted no time responding with seven runs on seven hits to take a 7-4 lead. After Wofford added a single run in the second inning, Clemson cut the deficit to 8-7 with three runs (on three hits) in the fourth inning. The Tigers tied the game with a single run in the fifth and took a brief 9-8 lead with another run in the top of the sixth inning. The Terriers tied the game in the bottom of the frame and then used consecutive four-run innings in the seventh and eighth innings to pick up their first win over Clemson since 1949.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game featured several momentum swings, but the final swing came in the seventh and eighth innings. After Wofford scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 13-9 lead, the Tigers loaded the bases in the eighth inning but Terrier closer Will Stillman struck out Chase Pinder to end the threat and leave the bases load. Wofford would go on to add four more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away.
What went right?
The Clemson offense had a good night putting up nine runs on 11 hits, led by three hits from Tyler Slaton. Reed Rohlman had a team-high three RBI as six Tigers had at least a hit and five had a RBI. On the mound, Paul Campbell allowed a single run in 2.1 innings of relief while Pat Krall did a nice job for three innings before running out of steam in the seventh.
What went wrong?
After scoring four runs right off the bat, Clemson starter Brody Koerner was unable to make it out of the first inning as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in 0.2 innings as the first five, and 10 of the first 11, Terriers reached base. The Tigers middle relief did a nice job of letting Clemson get back in the game, and take a brief lead, but the back end of the bullpen was unable to close out the game.
