CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (26-24) 13-5 win over Georgia Southern (27-22) on Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Eagles struck first with a single run in the top of the second, but the Tigers quickly answered in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-run homer from Chris Okey. Clemson added two more runs in the third on back-to-back solo homers from Eli White and Steven Duggar to take a 4-1 lead. A Robert Jolly RBI single added a run in the fourth to extend the Clemson lead to 5-1. After Georgia Southern scored a run in the top of the sixth, the Tigers plated four runs in the bottom of the frame to break the game open by a score of 9-2. The Eagles would push another run across in the seventh, but again Clemson answered with a four-run inning. Georgia Southern would add two runs in the top of the eighth but could get no closer as the Tigers took game one of the series.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in second and third innings as Clemson used the long ball to take an early 4-1 lead. Okey, White, and Duggar all homered against a pitcher that had given up only one homer and had a 1.11 ERA in 65.0 innings pitched entering the game.
What went right?
Matthew Crownover was his usual self in his last home appearance by allowing three runs on six hits in 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts. Hunter Van Horn retired all three batters he faced in the ninth, including two strikeouts. Eight of nine starters had a hit in the game, including six with multiple hits, led by a career-high four hits from Weston Wilson as the Tigers had 16 hits in the contest.
What went wrong?
Brody Koerner had an interesting inning in relief. He hit the first batter he faced, moved him to second on a balk, and allowed a hit to put two runners on base. He stuck out the next batter he faced, but a wild pitch and throwing error allowed him to reach and both runners to score.
