CLEMSON, SC — Here is a look back at Clemson’s (27-24) 5-4 win over Georgia Southern (27-23) on Saturday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
What happened?
The Tigers jumped to an early lead with two first inning runs. Steven Duggar hit a one-out single and Tyler Krieger reached on an error. Reed Rohlman singled to score Duggar and move Krieger to third. Chris Okey followed with a sac fly to right to plate Krieger and give Clemson a 2-0 lead. The Eagles wasted no time answering in the next inning with two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2. The Tigers regained the lead in the fourth on a RBI single from Tyler Slaton to score Okey who had singled earlier in the inning. After Georgia Southern took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth behind a solo homer and unearned run, Clemson answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 4-4. Okey broke the tie with a solo shot off the scoreboard to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning and Taylor Vetzel closed the game out in the ninth to give the Tigers the series win.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game had a couple of momentum swings, but the final game-changing moment came courtesy of Okey’s bat in the eighth inning. After the Eagles brought in a new reliever, Okey welcomed him to the game with a two-strike homer off the CWS sign on the scoreboard in left-center field.
What went right?
Zack Erwin gave Clemson a nice, long outing by battling for 8.0 innings while having to pitch out of some jams and around some errors. Vetzel did an outstanding job in the ninth by striking out two of the three batters he faced to end the game. Okey led the Tigers with three hits and also added two RBI while Duggar and Slaton each had two hits as a part of Clemson’s 11-hit attack.
What went wrong?
The error bug was back for the Tigers as they committed four errors in the contest that led to three unearned runs.
