ACC Tournament Day 1 Recap

DURHAM, NC – TCI takes a look back at Day One of the ACC Baseball Championship at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

 

 

 

 

#4 Florida State 3, #5 Clemson 1

The Seminoles scored three runs in the third inning and held off a couple of late Tiger rallies for a 3-1 win in game one of the day. Florida State only had three hits on the day, but all three came in the third inning as back-to-back two-out hits scored three runs. Clemson had the bases loaded with one out in both the seventh and eighth innings, but could only push a single run across.

#2 Miami (FL) 9, #7 Virginia 5

The Hurricanes scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a three-run deficit to take a 9-5 win in game two of the day. Miami (FL) scored the games first two runs in the first and fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead, but Virginia’s Kenny Towns hit a three-run homer in the sixth to give the Cavaliers the lead. Virginia added two runs to their lead on a two-run double from Joe McCarthy in the seventh, but the Hurricanes mounted their comeback to win their 13th straight game. Miami (FL)’s David Thompson, the nation’s RBI leader, gave the Hurricanes the lead with a two-run single in the eighth and Garrett Kennedy hit a three-run homer to cap the come-from-behind win.

#1 Louisville 7, #8 North Carolina 4

The Tar Heels jumped to an early 4-0 lead with a single run in the first and three in the third, but the Cardinals scored seven runs in the middle innings to pick up a 7-4 win in game three of the day. North Carolina’s Tyler Ramirez led off the game with a homer, but missed an opportunity as they loaded the bases with no outs in the first but could not push another run across. After the Tar Heels score three runs in the third, Louisville began chipping into the lead with a two-run homer from ACC Freshman-of-the-Year Brendan McKay. Sutton Whiting hit a two-out RBI double in the fifth to bring the Cardinals within a run and then had a two-run single in the sixth to give Louisville the lead for good.
