Back When: Williams

The summer recruiting season is in full-swing. Unfortunately, real, live college football is still several months away.

With that in mind, TheClemsonInsider is taking a look back at the recruitment of each returning player on the Clemson roster.

When Williams first emerged on the recruiting radar, he was a sophomore, still getting a grasp on the fact that his future was in football, not basketball.

Things were quite different at Clemson when Williams took his first visit in March of 2011. For starters, the Tigers had yet to roll out their new hurry-up, no-huddle offense brought in by former Texas high school coach Chad Morris.

By the time Jeff Scott offered Williams during that May evaluation period, the wheels had already been set in motion. Tajh Boyd was entrenched as the starting quarterback and the 2011 wide receiver signing class of Sammy Watkins, Martavis Bryant, Charone Peake and Adam Humphries were signed and waiting to enroll at Clemson.

Fast-forward 12 months later.

Williams is established as a legit, four-star prospect. Along with Clemson — his first offer — South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennnessee and Notre Dame had offers on the table.

Working in Clemson’s favor was Morris’ propensity to call as many play as possible, most of them coming via the pass, but there was ground to make up.

Heading into his June trip to Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp, Williams was a South Carolina lean. That was still the case a month later when he returned for the All-In Cookout.

Williams exited the annual Cookout listing the Tigers as his favorite.

“I just feel wanted at Clemson. All the coaches make me feel like I’m at home. It’s like a family,” he said.

Plans to announce a commitment were arranged for July 31. When he pulled the trigger that afternoon at Lake Marion High School, Williams joined wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Ryan Jenkins in the 2013 Clemson class.

Though Robinson and Jenkins eventually backed out on their commitments, Williams never wavered.

Marion Hobby served as the area recruiter for Williams.
