Ranking the opponents: Defensive ends

Today we continue our series on the best players Clemson will face this fall. With matchups against Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame, Florida State, South Carolina and Georgia Tech on the schedule the Tigers face one of the toughest slates in the country.

So who are some of the best players the Tigers will see in 2015? Today we examine the defensive ends.

KeShun Freeman, Georgia Tech

How he did last season? He played in all 14 games as a true freshman. He recorded 54 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

Why is he ranked here? Freeman is one of the up-and-coming stars in the ACC. The 6-1, 236-pound defensive end led the Yellow Jackets’ defensive line in tackles as he earned Freshman All-American honors. He also led the team in tackles for loss and blocked a punt.

Sheldon Rankins, Louisville

How he did last season? He led the Cardinals with seven sacks, while recording 12.5 tackles for loss.

Why he is ranked here? At 6-2, 305 pounds, Rankins sets the edge for the Cardinals’ 3-4 defensive scheme. He is good against the run and, as he proved with his seven sacks, he can be a prolific pass rusher, too. The coaches voted him as a third-team All-ACC player after he recorded 48 tackles last season.

DeMarcus Walker, Florida State

How he did last season? Walker recorded 38 stops last season, including six tackles for loss while playing in all 14 games for the Seminoles.

Why is he ranked here? He made great strides last season as his 38 tackles ranked second on the defensive line. At 6-3, 277 pounds, he does a good job against the run. He has the talent to be a good pass rusher as well, but he needs to show more consistency at getting to the quarterback.
