Joyner considers commitment after offer

Dakereon Joyner thought about pulling the trigger on a commitment to Clemson.

After all, it was the one offer that he coveted more than any other.

“I’ll know the right time to commit, whenever God tells me to and I feel like I’m ready to commit,” he told TheClemsonInsider, during a recent interview. “But I was thinking about it.

“But I’m going to take my time.”

Prior to wrapping up his three-day visit to Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp, the 2018 quarterback/athlete from Fort Dorchester was offered by co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott.

Joyner, who visited Alabama before the Clemson trip, might scratch the plans he made for Florida State and Duke.

“I don’t really want to go anywhere else this summer. The one offer I was really looking forward to was Clemson and I got it,” he said. “I really don’t want to go anywhere else, at least not yet, because I don’t want to learn from any other coaches.”

For Joyner, the experience in Clemson would be tough to match.

“Just being around the staff and the players, really, learning from Deshaun Watson, because he was out there watching us practice. Just learning from him and taking advice from him, just being around the staff, I just feel comfortable up there,” he said.

Quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter made a lasting impression.

“I got a lot better. I learned a lot from coach Streeter,” Joyner said. “I do have a couple of things to work on. I learned a lot and I know what I need to work on so I can be a better player.”

What did he take away from Streeter?

“Ball position, where I was with the ball,” Joyner said. “Sometimes I hold it too low, I need to hold it higher, like around my shoulder area, so I can have a quicker release.”

In eight games at quarterback last fall, Joyner completed 52 of 91 passes for 595 yards with 250 yards rushing. He also threw six touchdowns and rushed for three more.
