We’re approaching the halfway point in the month of July and conference media days are within site. Unfortunately, real, live college football is still several weeks away.
As the dog days of summer roll on, The Clemson Insider continues its look back at the recruitment of several of Clemson’s returning players.
DE [autotag]Chris Register[/autotag], Greensboro, N.C. – RS Freshman
Register’s first visit to Clemson was in June of 2012, before his junior season at Dudley High School in Greensboro, N.C. At the time, Clemson and Indiana were his only two offers.
UNC, Tennessee, Florida, Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia and Ole Miss came through with offers before the spring evaluation period in 2013. Auburn, Florida State and Miami jumped on board that spring.
Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell, who served as the area recruiter, stopped by Dudley that May. So did defensive ends coach Marion Hobby.
Before the end of the month, Register committed to Clemson. The fit within the program and school were among the reasons cited as the deciding factors.
“The campus, you can walk around the whole campus in eight minutes. It’s a small campus…that’s what I liked about it. You don’t have to drive everywhere. You can ride a bike or something.”
Clemson accepted Register as a linebacker commit. When he came on board, the Tigers already had a 2014 pledge from fellow four-star linebacker Korie Rogers.
Defensive backs coach Mike Reed played a role in Register’s commitment. Reed recruited Register for N.C. State before he took the job in Clemson.
