DUNCAN, S.C. – About a month after his visit to Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp, 2017 Union wide receiver [autotag]Shi Smith[/autotag] has the Tigers out front.
TheClemsonInsider spoke with him last Friday at the Palmetto State Showdown.
“It was pretty good,” Smith said of the Clemson camp. “I only got up there for a day, but it was pretty good. I caught a lot of passes.
“After we caught, went up and showed me a little film of Artavis Scott and how they get their freshmen the ball.”
Smith was sidelined for the 7-on-7 event after undergoing hand surgery earlier this month. He’ll stay on the shelf for the next four weeks, returning just in time for his junior season.
It was a fairly active summer for Smith, who camped at UNC and Tennessee, before injuring the hand in a 7-on-7 game against Spartanburg.
[autotag]Clemson[/autotag] is out ahead of UNC, Tennessee and South Carolina. Among the factors that pushed the needle in the Tigers’ direction is the production Artavis Scott enjoyed during his first season.
“(Scott), he had like 80 touches for 900-something yards and 13 touchdowns. As a freshman, I just want go up there and play,” Smith said.
Playing for Jeff Scott is also apart of the intrigue.
“He’s really exciting. He likes to go out and he likes to work. He likes to get a lot of reps in, and he doesn’t take any junk,” Smith said.
The facilities in Tigertown also stand out to the 6-foot, 170-pound prospect.
“It’s pretty nice. They didn’t get to show me the new one they’re building, but (Scott) was telling me about it,” Smith said. “(Scott) said he’s going to try to get me back up there so I can look at it.”
Smith isn’t ready to make a decision, but he’s certain of a few things will be taken into consideration.
“Really, looking at academics and the people that’s around the colleges, see how they help you out, and if it’s a big family,” he said.
