During the middle of a Saturday afternoon workout, Jack Stamler decided he was ready to accept Monte Lee’s offer to play baseball at Clemson.
The 6-1, 190-pound lefty from Greenville’s J.L. Mann High School committed to Clemson over offers from South Carolina, Virginia, Notre Dame, The Citadel, Furman and West Virginia.
“The campus is amazing, great baseball team, great baseball facilities and great coaches,” Stamler said, during an interview with TheClemsonInsider on Saturday night.
The opportunity to play for Lee was apart of the attraction.
“He’s a great guy. He’s a great coach, what he did at College of Charleston,” Stamler said. “He’s just a nice guy overall.”
Lee first contacted Stamler three days before he left the job in Charleston. Not long after he took over in Clemson, Lee was back in touch.
“(Lee) loves the way I compete. I go out there and I throw strikes. I just give it my all,” Stamler said.
A lifelong Clemson fan, Stamler looks forward to joining the baseball program in two years.
“The academics are great. The campus is great. Just all campus life with football, great football team and great atmosphere,” he said.
As a sophomore, Stamler was 6-0 with 15 saves and a 1.09 ERA.
There’s no word on whether Stamler will be a starter or reliever at Clemson.
“I’ve done both, so I think (Lee) thinks he can throw me out at any position, and expect me to succeed. I think I can, too,” Stamler said.
