Big boys need lovin’, too

ACC media days have come and gone and the dog days of summer are upon us. Now, we’re just a couple of weeks from the start of preseason camp.

TheClemsonInsider continues its look back at the recruitment of several of [autotag]Clemson[/autotag]’s returning players. Included in this Back When feature are more of the offensive and defensive linemen.

DT [autotag]Scott Pagano[/autotag], Honolulu, Hawaii – RS Sophomore

Former Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris was the first member of the Tiger coaching staff to reach out to Pagano, a four-star from Moanalua High School in Honolulu. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables and defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks quickly followed up.

Clemson offered in May of 2012, during Pagano’s junior year.

In July, Pagano took his first visit to Clemson. Before leaving, he told the coaching staff that he was ready to commit. His finals also included Alabama, LSU and Florida.

“They have a great, great philosophy there. They’re structured very well. It’s a family up there. I felt so comfortable being there. Family is super, super, super important to me. That was a key factor. Coach (Dabo) Swinney and my head coach are just alike, very, very religious. They do team bonding stuff, a lot of family stuff together. It was a good fit for me.”

The U.S. Army All-American considered taking other official visits, but he didn’t go to any other schools after his commitment to Clemson.

OL [autotag]Jay Guillermo[/autotag], Maryville, Tenn. – RS Junior

Shortly after Clemson put the finishing touches on its 2011 signing class, the staff sent an offer out to Guillermo, who was a junior at the time. A few days earlier, he was on campus for Junior Day.

Three days later, Guillermo was the first 2012 prospect to commit to Clemson.

“I’ve always been a Clemson, ever since I was born. I don’t even know why. Nobody in my family is a big Clemson fan. My grandfather, he played football, and he got recruited by them. He’s always liked them. I’ve just always loved Clemson.”

Guillermo was the first offensive lineman to commit to Clemson with Robbie Caldwell as the offensive line coach. Before arriving to Clemson, he played in the Under Armour All-American game.

OL [autotag]Ryan Norton[/autotag], Simpsonville, S.C. – RS Senior

Clemson offered Norton while he was on campus for a basketball game in the winter of 2010. After seeing the campus with former offensive line coach Brad Scott and former running backs coach Andre Powell, Norton met with Dabo Swinney, who delivered the offer.

That May, Norton committed to Clemson over South Carolina and Georgia Tech.

“I kind of feel like it’s a second home. I love the family atmosphere, love the coaching staff. Everything is perfect.”

OL [autotag]Maverick Morris[/autotag], Broxton, Ga. – RS Sophomore

Morris picked up an offer from Clemson while he was on campus for camp in June of 2012. A few days later, he committed.

Clemson’s 2013 offensive line class was rounded out with a signature from four-star Tyrone Crowder. Morris was a three-star.
