We heard Hunter Renfrow’s name a lot during the spring from Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.
Renfrow wowed the coaches with his ability to punt the ball, and Swinney loved the way he played wide receiver as he ran crisp routes and made one spectacular catch after another.
But that’s Dabo Swinney, right? He loves the underdog. He loves the walk-on kid who out works everyone else. Why wouldn’t he? That’s exactly who he was when he when he walked on at Alabama in 1989, eventually earning a scholarship and a starting job.
But that is lightning in a bottle, right? Surely a walk-on from Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach isn’t out playing all the four- and five-star athletes Clemson has recruited the last couple of years?
That’s exactly what is happening. I saw it for myself and so did other members of the media. This is not coach speak.
