When TheClemsonInsider first spoke to [autotag]Avery Roberts[/autotag], UMass and Old Dominion were his only offers.
Since that late January conversation, the four-star linebacker from Wilmington-Concord (Delaware) has picked up plenty of others, including Penn State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford and Virginia Tech.
[autotag]Clemson[/autotag] pulled the trigger in July.
“I was talking to coach (Brent) Venables. He was the one that told me they wanted to offer me,” Roberts told TCI, during a recent interview.
“I was excited about it. I’d been in contact with them for a while. I was excited that they offered.”
What was Venables’ message?
“He just complimented me on play and he just said how he wanted to get me down there at some point soon.”
Roberts plans to head south to South Carolina for trips to Clemson and Columbia, but he’s yet schedule any plans.
“I know I’m going to take a trip there at some point. I know it will be in the season or at some point right after,” he said.
Penn State, South Carolina, Nebraska, Oregon and Oklahoma have the most frequent contact.
“I don’t have any favorites right now,” Roberts said. said.
A number of factors will be considered as he continues through the process.
“Being able to gel with the coaches and a place that I can get a good education and get to my goal, hopefully, to play in the NFL, a school like that,” Roberts said.
As a sophomore, he had over 120 tackles with 6.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles. On the offensive side of the ball Roberts rushed for close to 500 yards with eight touchdowns.
