Clemson completed its first two-a-day practice of fall camp on Monday. The Tigers had a full-contact practice in the morning, and then finished the day with a walkthrough in the evening.
Here is what some of the players and coaches were saying about two-a-days and what has transpired in camp thus far.
“I think it’s good when we get the pads on,” wide receiver Artavis Scott said. “Its just good intensity and we just go out there and have fun.”
When asked which defensive back is the hardest to go up against, Scott couldn’t choose just one of them.
“To be honest, I think they all give us good work. It doesn’t matter if it’s the ones, twos, threes,” he said. “We look at it like everybody’s the starter. I’ll go against anybody … it’s going to make me better. It’s not going to hurt me at all.”
Quarterback Deshaun Watson says his knee feels fine after one week of practice. He says he will take time off if he absolutely needs it, but he does not feel like he needs to.
“I feel great. I’m just taking it one day at a time,” the sophomore said. “I feel healthy.”
Watson also had high praise for his receivers. He is confident in the depth Clemson is building at that position from the first team to the walk-ons.
“I’ve been pretty impressed with all the receivers,” he said. “They’ve been giving all they have.”
Defensive tackle Carlos Watkins says he is ready to be a starter again.
“I feel like I’m back to that level,” he said. “It took a minute to get back there. My confidence, that was the main thing, to get my confidence back. I feel like I got my confidence back so I’m headed in the right direction. There ain’t nothing holding me back now.”
Although he is already listed as the starter on the two-deep depth chart, Watkins knows there is competition behind him, so he is pushing himself to get better every day.
“We’re working, we’re competing. I’ve got guys behind me working for that job, so there’s no complacency,” he said.
The 2015 defense does not like being the question mark of the team. They are driven to prove the doubters wrong.
“That’s our drive right there. We want the same results as last year or even better. That’s what’s pushing us,” said Watkins.
“We’re going to come in here, get our job done, do our business and hopefully it pays off in the season,” said linebacker Ben Boulware. “This is a job for us, and that’s how we treat it.”
Defensive coordinator Brent Venables is really pleased by what he sees out of linebacker B.J. Goodson.
“He’s been real good. I’ve been real pleased with B.J. He’s better than he was in the spring, and he’s really establishing himself,” Clemson’s linebacker’s coach said. “I’ve been real pleased with both his production, effort, leadership and all that.”
