Looking Ahead: WR

Thanks to the foundation laid by Martavis Bryant, DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins, Clemson continues to recruit some of the country’s best wide receivers.

The current roster is loaded with Sunday-type talent. The starting trio of Charone Peake, Artavis Scott and Mike Williams is as good a group as any in the country.

Their backups would start at plenty of other places: Trevion Thompson, Germone Hopper, Deon Cain, Shadell Bell and Ray Ray McCloud. Walk-on Hunter Renfrow looks like he’s good enough to contribute, too.

Though Peake is the only senior on the roster, many believe Williams could follow in the footsteps of Bryant, Hopkins and Watkins and depart with eligibility still remaining.

Help is on the way. Four-star prospects T.J. Chase and Cornell Powell are set to sign in February. And the Clemson staff continues to push for one more in Diondre Overton, the lone wide receiver target on the 2016 board.

For the 2016 season, Hopper will be the lone senior, but it will also be Scott’s third season at Clemson, so he could depart for the league, too.

Co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Jeff Scott has already dispensed several offers to wide receivers in the 2017 class. Here are a few we’re closely tracking:

[autotag]J.T. Cauthen[/autotag] – Cuthbertson – Waxhaw, N.C.

Cauthen, a four-star, was last on campus in April. Duke, Michigan, UNC, N.C. State, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and West Virginia are among the schools that have offered.

[autotag]Tee Higgins[/autotag] – Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Clemson was included among the 10 favorites for the four-star, whose list was heavy on SEC programs. Florida State, Ohio State and UNC also made the list. Higgins is highly-coveted by the Vols and — more often than not — those guys don’t make it out of the state.

[autotag]Keyshawn Johnson Jr.[/autotag] – Calabasas, Calif.

The son of the famous wide reciever/ESPN personality, Junior has already been on campus several times, and there’s legit interest. The other major players include USC, Alabama, Ohio State and Nebraska.

[autotag]Ryan Jones[/autotag] – Mallard Creek – Charlotte, N.C.

In contention with Cauthen as the best 2017 wide receiver out of North Carolina, Jones was last on campus in February. N.C. State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia have offered.

[autotag]James Robinson[/autotag] – Lakeland, Fla.

Clemson hosted Robinson for several days in June when he made the trip up with a teammate, four-star running back A.J. Davis. Among the wide receivers on our list, Robinson might be the best prospect. Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State and Tennessee have also offered. This race could come down to Clemson and Florida.

[autotag]Shi Smith[/autotag] – Union

The best instate wide receiver for the 2017 haul, Smith is the only one of the group to pick up an offer from Clemson. After his one-day stop for camp, Smith told TCI that Clemson was his favorite. Smith is intrigued with the 2-position that Scott currently occupies for the Tigers.
