Williams pushing to play in ’15

Garrett Williams was all set to enroll at Clemson in January.

A few words of advice from a former Clemson tight end changed his plans and Williams opted to stick around for his final semester of high school at The First Academy in Orlando.

Why enroll early when you’re probably going to redshirt?

On the surface, Williams it looked like that’s the direction Williams was headed, but it wasn’t because he needed more time in the weight room or that he wasn’t good enough to play as a true freshman.

Between Jordan Leggett and Stanton Seckinger, Clemson had plenty of experience returning to the position. Plus, Milan Richard and Cannon Smith — both of whom redshirted in 2014 — had a leg up on Williams.

Jeff Scott, who served as Williams’ primary recruiter to Clemson, told reporters on Friday that Williams has “shown up” during preseason camp.

“He’s a guy that’s kind of gained everybody’s attention real quick in special teams, then also in short-yardage situations,” Scott said. “Really hunting guys out and knocking them back.

“He’s a guy that we’re going to continue to look at and see if he can have a role for us this year. The next 10 days, that will probably say a lot.”
