News and Notes: Football Camp Day 11

Saturday’s two-hour scrimmage in Death Valley was not a good one for Clemson kickers Greg Huegel and Alex Spence. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said the two kickers had an inconsistent day after being very consistent during practice.

Huegel, a walk-on from Blythewood, S.C., had a slight lead on Spence entering the scrimmage.

“Today they did not handle the little difference in the environment, I guess,” Swinney said. “We have a lot of work to do to get them ready for 85,000 in here, that’s for sure. But I think they are the right kind of guys, and I think it will all work itself out.”

Lakip is on schedule. Swinney said kicker Ammon Lakip will be back on the team when school starts on Wednesday.

Lakip was suspended from all team activities, including camp, following his June 6 arrest for driving under the influence and simple possession of cocaine.

“He has done everything we have asked him to do,” Swinney said. “We are really pleased with what he has done with all of his off the field responsibilities he had to take care of. But he has gone way above and beyond what we have asked him to do. He will be back. Then he has team discipline. He will play when we run him out there, but it is going to be a while.”

The Clemson Insider reported this past Monday Lakip will miss at least the first three games when he does return to the team.
