Clemson scored its second 2017 commitment on Monday night when four-star offensive tackle [autotag]Noah DeHond[/autotag] jumped on his offer from the Tigers.
The 6-7, 315-pound prospect picked up his Clemson offer shortly after he reclassified from the 2016 class and announced he would leave his home in Rochester, N.Y. (McQuaid Jesuit) to attend The Peddie School (Highstown, N.J.).
DeHond committed to Clemson over offers from Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, UNC, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.
TheClemsonInsider spoke with him on Monday night:
A lot of people out there kind of assumed it was Alabama, but why did you decide to go with Clemson?
DeHond: You know, the family atmosphere, the coaching staff, the academics, the facilities and campus. Everything about it was just perfect for me.
Since you’ve been going through the process, you talked about wanting to come southeast for college ball, but back when you first became a college recruit, could you have pictured yourself at Clemson?
DeHond: I watched them on TV a few times, but I never really thought that would be an actual option for me, but it came along and it just happen to be the one.
When you were down there last week and meeting with the coaches, what was the best part of all that and how it played into your decision today?
DeHond: They gave me a tour of the school when I was there, and that coaching staff is second-to-none. They’re definitely going to be in contention for some big championships over the next couple of years and I’m looking to be a big part of that.
You didn’t get to meet coach (Dabo) Swinney while you were visiting there, but have you talked since the visit and again today at some point?
DeHond: I talked to him some today and he’s really excited about it. I felt just as excited as he was. He seemed really happy about it. And he’s a great guy…and I love that coaching staff. He’s doing things right there.
Back when you re-classified, could you have imagined that you would get this much attention and interest from people in your college decision? Or was that something that you envisioned for yourself?
DeHond: My coach, coach (Christopher) Malleo, he said it would happen. I didn’t really believe him, but it did, and it happened to work out just right.
