It’s all part of the process

Dabo Swinney ended Saturday’s scrimmage in Death Valley by first jumping on the defense, and then during his attention to the offensive line.

He told both units they have to do better.

The offensive line had perhaps its best day of fall camp to that point. With the O-Line out in front blocking, the running backs rushed for 207 yards in the scrimmage, including a 65-yard C.J. Fuller touchdown. Quarterback Deshaun Watson threw two touchdown passes, while wide receiver Charone Peake caught one for 72 yards. He would have had another from 50 yards out, but Watson was called down after being tagged be a defender just before he let the ball go.

But the offensive line finished the scrimmage on a negative note. In short yardage and goal line situations, they failed on two separate occasions to convert. Then the heat got to the freshmen towards the end, which caused fatigue to set in.

The defense had its moments, too. Marcus Edmond stepped in front of a Nick Schuessler pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. Freshmen defensive tackle Christian Wilkins popped running back Adam Choice, forcing a fumble, which nickel back Travis Blanks picked up and returned 50 yards for a second defensive touchdown.

In all, the defense forced four turnovers as linebackers Jalen Williams and Dorian O’Daniel picked off passes that were tipped into the air.

But there were too many big plays allowed and the tackling was poor at times, which is what irritated Swinney.
